Urgent Care vs ER: Austin Pricing Breakdown (Save Hundreds)

Last spring, a friend in Austin stepped wrong off a curb and thought she might have sprained her ankle. She drove to the nearest "emergency" facility she found on Google Maps, got an X-ray, waited an hour, and left with a wrap and crutches.

The bill was $3,200.

Her ankle wasn't even broken.

The place she walked into was a freestanding ER — looks like urgent care, charges like an ER. That mistake is more common than you'd think. This guide exists so you know the difference, and so you know where to go for what.

What Urgent Care Actually Costs in Austin (Cash-Pay)

Budget-Friendly Options ($79–$125)

RediClinic (H-E-B) — $79 The cheapest walk-in visit you'll find in Austin. NP/PA staffed, inside H-E-B stores, solid for anything simple. Strep test + visit runs $89 total. Pick up your prescription and groceries on the way out.

MinuteClinic (CVS) — $99 Inside CVS pharmacies across Austin. Walk-in, no appointment. Good for basic illness, flu shots ($40), and minor stuff.

AFC Urgent Care — $125 Self-pay visit, straightforward pricing. Accepts Medicaid, which not all urgent cares do. North and South Austin locations.

Austin Regional Clinic (ARC) Urgent Care — $125 Multiple locations across Austin metro. X-ray available for $75 if needed.

Full-Service, Mid-Range ($150–$225)

CityDoc Urgent Care — $150 South Congress location. Stitches for $250, IV hydration for $199, X-ray + reading for $100. Add-on pricing but transparent about it.

Texas MedClinic — $225 all-inclusive This one's the standout. $225 covers the visit, labs, X-ray, sutures, and EKG — all-in, no surprise add-ons. 24/7 at select Austin locations. If you think you might need more than a basic exam, go here.

What an ER Bill Actually Looks Like

Emergency rooms are a different category. Before a single thing is done:

  • Facility fee just for walking in: $500–$1,500
  • Average ER visit (no admission): $1,500–$3,000
  • ER visit with imaging: $2,500–$5,000
  • ER visit that leads to admission: $5,000–$20,000+

That facility fee is real, and it's non-negotiable. You pay it for triage, before any treatment. The physician charges separately. The lab charges separately. It adds up fast.

When to Go Where

Urgent care handles: - Sore throat, cough, cold, flu — $79–$125 - Ear infections, pink eye — $75–$200 - Sprains and strains — $100–$250 - Small cuts needing stitches — $200–$600 - UTI symptoms — $75–$200 - Mild allergic reactions — $125–$350 - Rashes, minor burns, insect bites

Go to the ER for: - Chest pain or difficulty breathing - Signs of stroke: face drooping, arm weakness, slurred speech - Severe bleeding that won't stop - Head injury with loss of consciousness - Obvious bone fractures or visible deformity - High fever in infants - Anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction) - Poisoning, overdose, seizures

The gray zone — urgent care can handle more than you'd think:

The Texas MedClinic Argument

If there's any chance you'll need labs, X-rays, or stitches — skip the itemized urgent cares and go straight to Texas MedClinic. Their $225 flat rate includes all of it. No surprises.

At most urgent cares, labs and imaging are add-ons. At an ER, that same bundle easily runs $3,000–$5,000. MedClinic is also open 24/7 at select Austin locations, which makes it a genuine late-night ER alternative for anything non-life-threatening.

Watch Out for Freestanding ERs

Austin has several freestanding emergency rooms that physically look like urgent care clinics. They're not. They charge ER-level facility fees ($500–$1,500) for every visit, even minor ones.

Before you walk in, check the signage carefully. If you see "Emergency Room," "Emergency Center," or just "Emergency" — expect ER pricing. Some of these places are deliberately located near residential neighborhoods where they can capture urgent care traffic at ER rates.

For anything not life-threatening, urgent care saves $1,000–$4,000+ compared to the ER. Every single time.
