Upon having an initial consultation if the dentists believe that more intensive and invasive work is needed, a deep cleaning may be suggested. A regular cleaning focuses on the surfaces of the teeth and between teeth and above the gum line. During a regular cleaning, the teeth are also polished. A dental deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing, is needed in order to remove bacteria, calculus (tartar), and debris that has collected under the gum line. The dental hygienist will use a scaling instrument to remove plaque and tartar from the surface of the roots of your teeth. Please note: this procedure will require a minimum of two visits as an appointment.
